is a type of prayer desk primarily intended for private devotional use, but also often found in churches of the European continent. It is a small ornamental wooden desk furnished with a sloping shelf for books, and a cushioned pad (kneeler) on which to kneel. Sometimes, instead of the sloping shelf, a padded arm rest will be provided. This type is useful for devotions, such as the Rosary which do not require a book, or for private, non-liturgical prayer.

Walls
See here http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=1924372 for a discussion of this term relative to "mur."
It appears that "murailles" could be used to refer collectively to a set of walls although this usage is quite literary. "Murs" would be the more standard term for walls in a house whilst "muraille" would refer to large castle/fortification walls e.g.
"la Grande Muraille de Chine" = The Great Wall of China

Cabriolet.
A cabriolet is a light horse-drawn vehicle, with two wheels and a single horse. The carriage has a folding hood that can cover its two occupants, one of whom is the driver. It's where the word 'cab' comes from.

'Torsade' can also mean coil, or cable stitch according to word ref, I think it would be safe to assume that it is referring to some kind of rope. I have a feeling there was often ornamental rope across the doors of carriages, and also inside in case of bumpiness, a la handholds in modern trains, cars and buses. Unfortunately I lack the historical knowledge to back any of this up, but context would imply some kind of rail or hand hold, and 'torsade' a kind of rope.

perhaps the straps of the coach?
10 months, 2 weeks ago by dan__chapman
Interesting - that is indeed how the translator of the Gutenberg translation renders it. Another translation gives it as "fringes." I'm guessing it's the 19c version of the back of the new buses in London ( see here http://sjpost.posterous.com/routemaster-buses-unveiled-today ). These 'straps/fringes' would allow people to jump on the back of the coach and hold on.
